Ten junior league semis on Stanthorpe ovals this Saturday

RUGBY LEAGUE: This Saturday will be the biggest so far this season in the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League competition with 10 semi-finals at Stanthorpe.

Saturday's Daily News print edition will have photos of all 20 teams in the semis this weekend.

The Stanthorpe Gremlins have the chance to host all semis on Crisp and Sullivan ovals.

Gremlins president Lindsay Adams said the club would have 40 volunteers helping out at the finals this Saturday.

"It is fantastic that we are able to host the semi-finals, we are always excited to host major games,” he said.

"We are lucky to have recycled water to irrigate the fields.

"The two fields are well grassed and there are even some green patches.”

While games will be played on Sullivan and Crisp ovals, the canteen will be operated from Sullivan Oval, the furthest field up a small hill on the western side of Stanthorpe.

One of the features of the day for the Stanthorpe club will be the under-16 minor semi-final when the home team will play Goondiwindi at noon on Sullivan Oval.

"The U16s are again coached by David Fleming who often coaches the team into the semi-finals,” Adams said.

"Historically we have had a small pack but the team has a couple of bigger forwards this season,” he said.

"We have handy halves in Ky Rashleigh and Harry Williams.

"Overall, numbers are up this season at the Stanthorpe Gremlins.”

The club fielded an U18 side which played two games against Cowboys U18s and one against the Glen Innes Magpies in Tenterfield this season.

Adams is hoping for a large crowd at the semis.

"Bring the extended family. There will be some exceptional footy so all league supporters are encouraged to come along,” he said.

The winning teams in each major semi-final will qualify for the September 8 grand finals at Goondiwindi.

The losing teams in the major semis will play the winners of the minor semi-finals in five preliminary finals. These games will be hosted by Collegians at Risdon Oval on September 1.
