Ten meets a year for drag racing club
THE Warwick District Drag Racing Association opened the Warwick Dragway in 2000 after earlier running three street meetings in East St in conjunction with Operation Drag, Blue Light Disco and the then Warwick Shire Council.
The club runs 10 meetings a year at the dragway at Morgan Park. The track is also used for driver training with Olympian Matthew Denny one of the trainees during his last year at Toowoomba Grammar School.
Emergency services also use the 200m drag strip for driver training.
The club is currently enjoying its winter recess and will return for the 6 Bangers Nationals on September 16-17. The VW Weekend will be held on September 30-October 1 and JP Racing Dragfest Series round 2 on October 14-15.
Vice-president John Loy said the club catered for anyone with a registered or unregistered vehicle or bike keen to race.
"We run 10 different brackets, including street cars, which cater for cars used for everyday transport,” he said.
Juniors are eligible to start at the age of seven and can race in junior classes to the age of 17.
Some drivers do up old vehicles for drag racing or race custom made dragsters, there is a class for everyone.
The club has a training day each year specially for prospective new members to try the sport.
