South east Qld polocrosse heads to Cunningham

THE O'Leary brothers will be part of the Cunningham 1 team in this weekend's carnival at the Bony Mountain Recreation Grounds.

The Cunningham 1 team will include the O'Leary brothers, the Waugh sisters, Ella and Ryle, Australian World Cup player Lauren Sillitoe and Rebecca Byrne.

Five members of the team have played polocrosse for Queensland and Byrne represented New South Wales before moving to the Warwick area and continuing her polocrosse career.

Four members of the O'Leary family will play this weekend; Zac and Anthony are in the top team while their brother Joshua and father Paul will be in the Cunningham 2 team.

Paul and wife Jennifer O'Leary have nine children, eight boys and one girl, and all have been involved in the sport. While Jennifer works behind the scenes at carnivals, Paul and all nine children played for Cunningham and eight represented Queensland. The family of polocrosse enthusiasts is completed by Matthew, Luke, Jessica, Stephen, Michael and Daniel.

Yesterday, Paul said he enjoyed working horses and playing the game.

"I love the camaraderie in the sport; there are not many sports you can play with your kids when you are nearly 60," he said.

Paul was born in Warwick and first played at Chinchilla after the family moved to the Western Downs. He later played for Quilpie but for many years has been part of the Cunningham club, of which his father Jack was a foundation member.

"Jennifer and I will have two grandchildren playing next year, which will make four generations playing in the red of Cunningham."

Lauren Sillitoe (nee Cant) will play on her home ground for the first time since marrying fellow Cunningham player Chris Sillitoe earlier this year.

Chris often plays in the Cunningham 1 team but is unavailable this weekend due to work. Lauren played for Australia in last year's World Cup in South Africa and will captain Queensland at the nationals in Albury starting April 18.

Play from 8am tomorrow and Sunday. There is a Saturday night dinner and entertainment.
