Ten-year journey to a state victory
AFTER 10 years of state competition in inter-school equestrian, Alistair Schramm has finally won his first state title.
In fact, he shared national success last year in Melbourne before he won a state title.
Schramm was at the Warwick Horse Trials Club facility at Morgan Park at the weekend as part of 100 students competing in inter-school state championships in combined training and eventing.
He hails from Meringandan and is a student at Toowoomba Grammar School.
Schramm won preliminary eventing at last year's nationals in Melbourne and the same class at the weekend at state level.
"I was in front last year but dropped to second in showjumping," he said.
This year he scored 44.3 in dressage to set up a lead and then went clear in cross country and showjumping.
"Dressage is my strongest discipline and if you can score under 50, you will be close to the lead in any competition," Schramm said.
While he lives near Toowoomba, Schramm is a member of the Warwick Horse Trials Club and competes on the Southern Downs three to four times a year.
He won on his 11-year-old thoroughbred Sweeny.
His brother Dominic is currently chasing an Olympic dream in America but for Alistair, his first year out of school will be paramedic science at university and some riding.
"I am keen to keep riding but not as a sole profession," he said.
