Tennis courts flooded

IF you bounce a ball at the Warwick and District Tennis Association courts prepare to be splashed with water.

The club is trying to come to terms with a flood damage bill worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Club members converged at the Fitzroy Street courts to salvage nets, memorabilia and club items during Monday night's floodwater but their late night attempts were unable to save the old courts.

Club president Nathan Costello said one court was badly damaged with the green synthetic surface lifting from the ground at several places.

“It should all be covered by insurance; replacing the court costs about $30,000,” Costello said.

“This court was probably worst hit because it's the oldest.

“The water just poured in from Home Hardware next door.

“The other courts just need some maintenance, which should be able to be done by us.

“The water went up to the first stair of the clubhouse and we ended up with around one foot (30.5cm) of water over all of the courts.

“We'll have the nets back on four or five courts soon, and the front courts will be available for use from this afternoon.

“We'll let the other courts dry out for a while longer.”
