Williams, 32, joined Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert on that figure with only Helen Wills-Moody (19), Steffi Fraf (22) and Australia's Margaret Court (24) ahead of her.

Williams put her good friendship with Caroline Wozniacki aside yesterday to win her third straight title in New York and a record sixth in all - a record shared with Evert.

The 6-3 6-3 victory at Flushing Meadows came on the back of a poor season at the majors.

At the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon, Serena fell in shock upsets.

She never made it past the fourth round at the year's first three majors, a run of failure she hadn't experienced since her major debut as a 16-year-old in 1998.

The world No.1 blasted 29 winners to seal the victory.
