A DRIVING instructor is teaching Toowoomba drivers the importance of observation with a terrifying video.

Instructor Richard Armitage from U Can Drive posted a video which shows traffic safely negotiating the intersection of Long and Ruthven Sts.

But after a 4WD turned right from Long St onto Ruthven St, a Budget rental truck suddenly barrels through from the southern end of Ruthven St, blatantly running a red light.

The truck's speed was described as "horrendous".

If the truck had gone through the intersection seconds earlier or later there could have been a fatal crash, Mr Armitage said.

He said the footage showed the importance of drivers paying attention at all times.

"You can't trust that just because you have right of way that it's safe to go," he said.

"If everyone is doing the right thing, accidents don't happen.

"It's your job to make sure you are doing the right things - watching for signs and road markings.

"And watch for people doing the wrong thing."

Why we can't negotiate roundabouts

Mr Armitage also weighed in on the issue of why a large number of Toowoomba residents don't seem to be able to indicate properly through the city's roundabouts.

He said indicating at roundabouts was a problem in the Garden City.

"People don't seem to understand how to indicate," he said.

"Once again this shows the importance of observation.

"Just because they're not indicating doesn't mean they're not coming your way."

He said the issued seemed to stem from the misconception that indicating was a courtesy.

"In fact it's a legal requirement," he said.

Mr Armitage said the easiest way to think about indicating through roundabouts was to treat it as though it was a normal intersection when approaching the roundabout.

All motorists must indicate left when they exit a roundabout.
