Local storm chaser confident rain will come to Downs

OUR farmers' prayers for rain may be answered this Christmas with local storm chaser Terry West confident we will see some wet activity over the next couple of weeks.

Massie farmer Bill Bowen said he is currently planting forage sorghum along with other farmers around the district putting in corn and mung beans, who "wouldn't say no to a couple of inches".

"We would never knock back rain," Mr Bowen said.

"We are still bouncing back after the floods but seem to be recovering well.

"Last Christmas we had some nice local rain and it was the headwater that caused us dramas.

"While it would be good to get the planting done before it rains, we will take it whenever it comes," he said.

Terry West said Warwick seems to in a spot where we miss out on a lot of storms.

"I haven't quite worked it out yet, but I watch storms build up to the west of us and go right around us and form again to the east," he said.

"I'm not saying this is the answer, but I am beginning to think it has something to do with the granite ridge on the outside of town.

"There must be winds out there causing the storms to break up."

Mr West said in the next few weeks leading up to Christmas we can expect to see a series of troughs moving through the region.

"There will be a slight improvement and we will see some moisture around," he said.

"The storms will kick off today in fact, but over the next month it's not likely we will see flooding unless something develops over the Coral Sea."

The Bureau of Meteorology said the next week will be the peak of storms.

"The trend for the Southern Downs will be below average looking into the New Year," meteorologist Bryan Rolstone said.

"There won't be major flooding like previous summers.

"Storms may cause localised flooding but it's looking good for the farmers."
