WELL done to Dalby for winning two A-grade premierships in Toowoomba/Darling Downs footy and then the division 2 Aussie rules premiership at the weekend.

There are times in AFL and rugby league in particular that Warwick has been performing much better in both sports than Dalby, a town with a similar population.

Warwick had one win out of four grand finals in various codes and grades, a convincing 3-1 Wolves win against Garden City in the Football Toowoomba colts grand final. Once Warwick took a 2-1 lead in the second half, they clearly looked the better side.

Down the years, I have suggested in this column that all codes get together to have a Super Saturday or Super Weekend of sport in Warwick to boost local sport and attract leaders in their fields to talk to players about motivation, training, fitness, diet and the like.

There seems to be a belief in teams from Dalby that they can win grand finals, the TRL is an example. No one in their wildest dreams would have expected a 48-4 whitewash against Pittsworth in the TRL A-grade grand final as happened 11 days ago. It's no surprise to see Dalby record a grand final victory in A-grade rugby union. And then experience got them home in division 1 Aussie rules against the Redbacks. This year, it was Dalby beating Goondiwindi. Both towns are steeped in rugby tradition.

Warwick clubs are talking about returning to A-grade/division 1 men's competitions in Aussie rules and rugby and I know the Wolves would love to field a women's team in Toowoomba.

It might be the footy off season but there is talk in all clubs already about next year. Some like the Warwick Cowboys have events planned. The September 23 Cowboys bull ride is at Father Ranger Oval.
