The big chill may lift (a bit) by tomorrow

THE bitter chill of winter continued to make its presence felt around the Rose City, with temperatures dipping below zero for a second morning in a row yesterday.

Warwick residents woke to a chilly -2.7 degrees yesterday, just slightly cooler than the previous morning when the mercury dropped to -2.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster David Bernard said the monthly average minimum temperature for July was three degrees.

"The last few mornings have been as low as six degrees colder than the average," he said.

"Temperatures have probably got as cold as they are going to go this week."

A combination of a cold, dry air mass, no cloud and hardly any wind was behind the freezing temperatures and widespread frosts, according to Mr Bernard.

"It's not unusual to see a very rapid drop in the temperature in the early evening, before it stabilises around midnight," he said.

"These kinds of conditions are typical a few days after a changes goes through."

But there's some slight relief on the way for residents, who may have a small window of opportunity to thaw out in the coming days.

"Temperatures will be milder as cloud increases on Friday and Saturday," Mr Bernard said.

"A dry south-westerly change will come through late Saturday and Sunday, bringing more frost to the region."

A run of cold mornings of this magnitude hasn't been felt since August last year, when the Rose City experienced three mornings in a row below -3 degrees.

In Stanthorpe the temperature fell to -4 degrees, with residents waking to a winter wonderland of frozen trees and iced over ponds.
