COMMENT: The buck stops with those behind the wheel
WE HAVE made a less- than- auspicious start to the Queensland Road Safety Week initiative.
We are told today that drug-drivers are putting Southern Downs motorists at risk; there were more than 70 traffic infringements around Leyburn at the weekend; and there are four intersections in town that are now a big worry to police.
And these revelations should be a big worry to all of us who share the roads.
Over the past seven days, 14 people have been charged with driving under the influence of drugs on our region's roads.
Police say the number of drug-drivers being detected is alarming and shows the dangers now faced by other road users.
Leyburn police issued 55 speeding tickets at the weekend and had five drug-driving detections. Compared with last year's total of 26, this was a significant jump.
Closer to home, Warwick residents have been warned to take caution when negotiating four high-crash intersections in town.
Police say the intersections on Percy and Albion Sts, Albion and Victoria Sts, Dragon and Wood Sts and Fitzroy and Dragon Sts are to be treated with the utmost respect by motorists.
We have been informed: we have been warned: there is no one to blame but ourselves if we are caught in the net.
