OPINION: The council’s gas proposal should get town talking
ON THE face of it, the Southern Downs Regional Council has seized on a plan that could be the boost this community has been desperate for - a $50 million pipeline carrying gas to Warwick.
It's not so much the gas that would be the big windfall under this proposal ... but the potential it would seem to carry to draw new businesses to Warwick.
If this were the end result of the bold scheme - said to be attainable at no cost to our struggling ratepayers - then it seems not only a great idea, but one that should be widely embraced.
Warwick's mayor Peter Blundell tells us that there are no plans to fund the project through ratepayer contributions.
He says today if the scheme were to go ahead with the level of support required, funding would be "pursued with infrastructure management companies, business and state and federal governments".
This is just a broad brush proposal at this stage and much detail and feasibility studies are yet to come.
But at first blush it does get the juices flowing.
The Warwick Chamber of Commerce says the proposal would be "absolutely beneficial" to the town.
The Daily News will throw open its columns to your comments ... and follow this proposal very closely and with great interest.
