ONE thing that never changes in Warwick sport is the development of sports facilities.

In the past month, irrigation has been laid across the hallowed turf of the Slade Park cricket ground to enable irrigation of the outfield with the recycled water from the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Slade Park has always been regarded as a great facility with a good wicket but now it will have an outfield that at least doesn't remind the farmers in each team about the dry weather.

I have often noticed how dry and brown the field is. The football fields at Queens Park have been extended to the south east to allow enough room for another field for the juniors and a further extension to the west in the off season will allow for even more fields next winter.

Not sure if the cricketers will need the extra room as there is already plenty of room for the turf wicket and main cricket field but a bit more room on the synthetic field will be a bonus.

Queens Park has always been a big cricket oval and I recall stories down the years about Charlie Carrie hitting massive straight sixes on the ground in the days when the fence was the boundary.

There are three new tennis courts at Warwick State High School on the western side of Hamilton Oval and it was good to see there was no shortage of room at St Mary's School Athletics Carnival even after the courts took space to the west.

Obviously, the new courts replace the existing courts where new classrooms are now been built.

There are plenty of other upgrades around the grounds which included a lot of voluntary work.
