Santas the number one breed for youth scholarship winner
THE long annual trip from Tasmania to Warwick for the santa gertrudis youth camp has paid off for Maddy Page.
For several years the Tasmanian teen has attend the annual event and this year her efforts were rewarded with one of the top prizes.
Maddy took home the coveted RJ Kleberg Memorial Scholarship at the weekend.
As the winner of the scholarship, Maddy follows in the footsteps of last year's winner Warwick cattleman Steven Maher.
The scholarship recognises Maddy as a youth ambassador for the santa gertrudis breed across Australia.
For the past seven years, the santa gertrudis has been number one for the young cattlewoman.
"They're pretty unique," she said.
"Down in Tasmania there's not a lot of them - it's just not the right climate."
Maddy's attraction to the breed saw her become involved with Allen and Cathy Murfet from Catnal stud.
Showing cattle has opened her to a whole new world.
"I love it. You make new friends and get new opportunities too," she said.
"The reward itself is at the end of the day. It's a lot of hard work to get the cattle ready."
When she's in Warwick for the camp, Maddy plays a role as one of the team leaders, showing the younger kids the ropes.
"I love working with the kids and showing the cattle," she said.
