Pantone's 2016 colours of the year: Serenity and Rose Quartz

WHAT was once an insider industry indicator, the Pantone Colour of the Year, is now a universal zeitgeist - the defining, current spirit or mood for style, fashion and interiors. So are you ready for the news, the Pantone Colour for 2016?

Well, actually there are two Pantone colours chosen for 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity. These two colours when harmoniously blended create a magical, twilight/sunset image. And it's the imagery these colours evoke that matters. Silky, flowing, sunsets, soft skin tones and the calmness of the sky and sea - these are all images of serenity that the people of Pantone and their global industry experts agree are required.

We all know the world has gone to hell in a hand basket (one of the few American sayings I like) hence, in the words of Pantone, consumers are seeking welcoming colours that psychologically reassure. The colours are intentionally serene, reminiscent of the expanse of the sky, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation in these turbulent times.

The biggest fashion bloggers are already going berserk over Pantone's rogue choice of two colours. But according to Pantone's website, choosing two colours reflected the growing unisex trend in fashion.

According to Pantone's executive director Leatrice Eiseman: "This more multilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers' increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression which includes a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged."

Rose Quartz and Serenity-coloured clothing choices are already flooding the catwalks of our stores.
