YOUR SAY: The Nationals ‘don’t get it’

WARREN Truss has said that he hoped Malcolm Turnbull would heal the divisions in the Coalition.

But only on National Party terms, of course - there will be no compromise on gay marriage, climate change, the republic or anything like that.

Like so many other Abbottites, Truss and the Nats just don't know what is going on.

It hasn't yet percolated into their brains that things are changing and have changed.

Their wilful ignorance has direct implications for the economy.

The day before Warren Truss expressed his hopes for Malcolm Turnbull, he also said that the Federal Government would fund infrastructure development in Queensland (the Bruce Highway, for example) only if the Queensland Government started selling off assets.

But asset sales were the great issue at the recent State election, in which the people resoundingly rejected both the idea of selling everything and those who wanted to do it.

Malcolm Turnbull is now Prime Minister because his ideas are more in tune with what the people of Australia want.

The Nats blithely ignore this fact, and are determined to stymie what Turnbull and the people want.

This is no way for them and the rest of the Coalition to remain in government.

Following Malcolm Turnbull's rise to the job of Prime Minister, we asked readers - Is it time Australia became a republic? Is it time we elect a president?

No, but it's a clear indication that party politics is failing this country.

- Richard Hogan

No. The vote by MPs was reflective of how opinion polls were going.

They vote reflects what the most of the public would have wanted. It may be ugly at times, but I prefer it to the American system, where an unpopular leader can be stuck there for 4 years.

Here if it is obvious that a leader has lost public support, then there is the opportunity to change course

It's called a democracy isn't it? And for those who whinge about their salaries, you can stand for parliament and have a chance of getting one of those jobs yourselves because it IS a democracy.

- Graeme Carson

Or we could try following our system and realise we vote for a PARTY not a PERSON. Incidentally... Interestingly, between 1901 and 1915, Australia experienced 11 prime ministerships - with two men, Andrew Fisher and Alfred Deakin, having Rudd-style multiple cracks at it. Not new.

- Lyn Prowse-Bishop

I understand what you're saying but it doesn't sit well with me... Something illegal, yes by all means, boot him out, but not being popular????

They knew who he was and what he stood for whilst they were in opposition. That's when you change leaders due to popularity or lack of.
