Power of the book side awakened at Warwick West
MAY the fourth be with you.
That's the message at Warwick West State School this week as students embrace Star Wars Day in a huge way.
Teacher librarian Sue Higgins said the idea came out of a connection with a young student through a shared love of Star Wars.
"I discovered that one of the students was a really big Star Wars fan and started engaging with her about it," she said.
"We're always trying to find inroads into our learners' lives, so I wanted to make that connection with her.
"And based on the connection we had, I saw the benefit for the whole school."
Mrs Higgins said the student, Marlea Fischer in Year 4, often flew under the radar, but this was her chance to shine.
"We are always trying to connect kids with reading," she said.
"And we're always trying to find ways to make the library appealing to the kids and engaging the kids with books and reading.
"Star Wars is huge at the moment, again, and it's the perfect vehicle to have some fun and learn at the same time."
Mrs Higgins said a few of the parents at the school have got right behind the project.
"One of our parents works at Holden and they have loaned us a whole heap of life-size Star Wars character cut-outs, which look fantastic," she said.
"Another works at Big W and they've also loaned us some of their point-of-sale stuff.
"With all of that we've built a great display with heaps of Star Wars books."
Mrs Higgins said Star Wars themed activities would run all week for the kids.
"We have a 'So you think you know Star Wars' quiz, which was compiled by a couple of our teachers who are both huge fans themselves," she said.
"We have devised a code-cracking game as well, students have to find heaps of hidden characters and as they do they'll find a letter or word, when they have them all there'll be a message to crack.
"As well we'll have a Talk like Darth Vader competition and we want to hear from everyone with their best 'Yoda-isms'."
Lucky these students are. Fun it will be, yes.
