Lyon to lead PMs XI team stacked with internationals
FORGOTTEN ODI spinner Nathan Lyon will lead a Prime Minister's XI stacked with current and former Australian stars against England in a Twenty20 clash at Canberra's Manuka Oval on Friday.
Lyon - last year's leading Test wicket-taker and the world's No.9-ranked bowler - will take the reins of a strong side boasting seven players to have played for Australia, including the likes of ex-Test and ODI all-rounders James Faulkner and Moises Henriques, former Test keeper Peter Nevill and fringe Test batsman Peter Handscomb.
Axed Test batsman Nic Maddinson, who finished the Big Bash League season with two matchwinning half-centuries in the final three matches, has also been given a chance to prove himself against an international line-up.
"It's pleasing to put together a really strong side to represent the Prime Minister's XI, this is one of the most experienced teams we've assembled for this clash in a number of years," said National Talent Manager Greg Chappell in a statement.
"Nathan Lyon gives this team plenty of leadership, with the support of Brad Haddin as coach.
"It's pleasing to have a number of other players in this squad with international experience, including Peter Handscomb, Peter Nevill and James Faulkner."
The likes of rising Queensland paceman Brendan Doggett and spinner Mitchell Swepson, who toured India with the Test team last April, have also been included.
"It's also a great opportunity for a number of players in strong form in the Big Bash League, including Nic Maddinson and Sean Abbott as well as emerging talents such as Mitchell Swepson and Brendan Doggett," Chappell added.
"We're confident this team can give England a real test ahead of the T20 Tri-Series."
The match will serve as England's warm-up for their T20 Tri-Series with Austraila and New Zealand, which opens at the SCG on Saturday with a clash between the Anzac rivals.
The match will take place at Manuka Oval, with a start time of 7.15pm.
