Community Event of the Year - Relay for Life
THE Warwick Relay for Life event was held in September 2013 and was an outstanding success with approximately 500 people either walking or attending the ceremonies and an incredible $73,000 raised for cancer research.
The event was supported by the Queensland Cancer Council and co-ordinated by Jo-Ann Capp.
Staging the event was a huge community effort, with many local business and organisations donating goods and services.
The goodwill and support from everyone ensured that initial estimations of the event were far exceeded. For example, organisers felt the fundraising target of $15,000 would be difficult however the total funds raised showed just how much cancer has touched the local community and how much support was given.
Teams participating in the relay came from everywhere - some being friends who were affected by cancer in some way, others from different businesses in the region and several schools and government departments.
Organisers felt the event contributed to the healing process for some bereaved families, knowing they were not alone.
The sunset ceremony for remembrance was a moving experience and all who participated felt it was well received.
The Relay for Life bought people together under one banner to help raise funds and awareness about cancer.
The idea to bring people together from all walks of life to one place at one time to show support for each other, carers, survivors and loved ones is highly commendable and very deserving of the 2014 Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award.
