Third win in a row for Warwick State High student

CROSS COUNTRY: Warwick State High School student Sophie Follett has won her third successive Darling Downs title in cross country.

She won the 16 years race only three days after winning the Warwick Credit Union X Country during the Pentath-run.

Follett is one of three Southern Downs athletes to win races at the regional school cross country championships at Kearney Springs in Toowoomba.

Samantha Brodie, Asbjorn Gaskell and Follett are the three winners from the region.

St Mary's student Ben Carey won bronze while Texas students Ella Byrnes (second) and Braithen Scott (third) were placed. Jordan Waterworth (St Joseph's, Stanthorpe) was third in his race.

Seven hundred students competed with up to 51 runners in each age group.

Follett has previously represented Queensland at national level and gets the chance to vie for state selection again when the top six Darling Downs placegetters in each age group head to St Paul's College at Bald Hills on July 15-17 for the state championships.

"My aim is top 10 at the state championships,” she said.

Warwick Christian College student Samantha Brodie won her first regional cross country title when she finished first in the 18/19 years age group.

"The state championships will be my first in school sport,” she said.

She is the first regional cross country winner from her school.

Asbjorn Gaskell (Stanthorpe High) was first in the 17 years boys event.

Any top-six positions not taken up in the Darling Downs team by this Friday will then be offered to placegetters outside the top six so the region has a full quota at Bald Hills.

A Queensland team will be named to compete in the nationals in Hobart in August where an Australian schools team will be selected to go to world school cross country in Paris in April.
