We cheer our boys on from the sidelines

FROM the very first season in 1986 when the Warwick Cowboys joined the Toowoomba Rugby League the Warwick Daily News was there.

Rugby league in Warwick dates back to 1913 when most players played both union and league each weekend.

Such was the strength of Warwick players, representative games against Ipswich and Toowoomba were held, despite the First World War, between 1915-1918.

The combined Cowboys team of Collegians and Eastern Suburbs players won its first premiership in reserve grade in 1986 and won first grade premierships in 1987 and 1988.

Warwick Daily News sports editor Gerard Walsh has been a passionate supporter of the club since it was formed.

"Nothing can beat the A grade premiership win in the club's second year," Gerard said.

"The Cowboys were trailing late in the grand final when Pittsworth were penalised.

"The Cowboys threw the ball wide and second-rower Luke Brennan scored the winning try."

Thirty years later, the Warwick Daily News was there when the Cowboys won the 2015 TRL Club Champions award and took out the minor premiership in reserve grade.
