Three to debut
THEY all love scoring goals and will be wearing Darling Downs colours for the first time in the Queensland Primary School Hockey Championships in Toowoomba on June 16-19.
Joshua Jensen, of The Scots PGC College, St Mary’s student Matt Eastwell and Warwick East State School student Jacob Reid trained for three days last week under Darling Downs coach George Goodsell.
The Darling Downs boys side won 3-0 against the regional girls side, a far cry from some past years when the girls very victorious in the annual trial game.
Joshua scored one goal and both Matt and Jacob were involved in the lead up to goals.
All three have played in the Warwick Hockey Association since the age of six.
Darling Downs has its first state game against Capricornia on June 16.
Joshua has a best of seven goals in a game but will be playing in the halves for Darling Downs.
“I like to attack but will have to do a lot more defence at the state championships,” Joshua said.
Matt is a forward with a best of eight goals in club hockey where he plays centre forward or centre half.
He will be one of the Darling Downs forwards at the state titles.
Jacob has a best of seven goals a game and is set to play in the halves for the regional side.
At the state titles, he will hit out for the short corners and also defend against the opposition’s corners.
Matt and Joshua are part of the attacking short corner formation for Darling Downs.
There will be no club hockey this weekend in Warwick as the local association is hosting 42 teams at the veterans’ women’s state championships at Queens Park.
The first games are at 8am Saturday and finals in all grades will be played on Monday.
