Three weeks of top polocrosse action starts Saturday
IF you see a group of people walking around Warwick in the next three weeks wearing the same coloured shirts, odds are they are in town for a bonanza of polocrosse.
Events start this Saturday at Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve when more than 40 teams will play in the annual Cunningham carnival in addition to the Hyfeed Cooper Cup and the first appearances of the Australian teams.
Cunningham player Carly Cooper and John Franklin, from the Gold Coast, will co-captain the Queensland team against New Zealand in Cooper Cup this weekend.
The Australian open men's and women's teams will play two games Saturday and another two Sunday against the Queensland men's and women's Barastoc Interstate Series teams.
After this weekend, there will be more action at Killarney during Easter for the Gold Coast carnival when the Australian players will be in action on day 1.
Then on April 20-23 at Morgan Park, the Carroll Truck Sales International Series, Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup will be played.
Australian and South African international teams, teams from four states and club teams from at least two states will be among up to 100 teams at Morgan Park.
Australian women's captain Suzette Thomas from the South Midlands club in Western Australia has spent the first of the next 17 days on the Southern Downs and said things were on track so far in the Australian camp.
"The facilities at the Cunningham grounds are excellent, this is my second time at Cunningham after being in camp here before the 2007 World Cup,” she said.
While the fans are already thinking about the April, 2019, World Cup in Warwick, Thomas said the whole focus in the next few weeks would be winning the Test series against South Africa in the women's and men's.
"They have an exceptionally strong team,” she said.
Games Saturday and Sunday, admission $12 adults each day and children under 15 free.
