Storms forecast to hit this afternoon

UPDATE: Thunderstorms and strong winds are a chance of ruining today's fine Toowoomba weather.

Bureau of Meteorology weather forecaster Steven Hadley said an upper trough was moving quickly towards Toowoomba from the west.

Mr Hadley expected thunderstorms would develop over the ranges in the early part of this afternoon.

He said Toowoomba, Stanthorpe and the area east of Warwick had the highest chances of rainfall.

"The most likely element of concern would be strong winds today," Mr Hadley said.

"Hail is a minor risk today."

Thunderstorms were recorded in the Moree region in north west New South Wales as well as near Goondiwindi this morning.

EARLIER: Toowoomba and the rest of the Darling Downs could be in for a wild day with authorities forecasting thunderstorms.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms until this evening, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Toowoomba's forecast is for a possible shower late this morning clearing during the evening.

There is the chance of a thunderstorm from the late morning until this evening.

It could get to a maximum of 26 degrees today.
