Tickled pink to help a cause

CANCER survivor Kara Bagorski is a strong young woman who knows first-hand the fear and heartache associated with the disease - and she hopes to inspire others to band together to find a cure.

The Commonwealth Bank savings specialist, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was just 19 years old, has seen the dreadful disease take over the lives of her close ones too.

"My whole family has been affected by cancer and I've lost some people pretty close to me," she said.

"My mum had ovarian cancer as well and had a full hysterectomy; my grandma had bowel and then brain cancer and my grandfather had bone cancer."

Thankfully, Miss Bagorski has been given the all-clear but that good news hasn't ended her determination.

Today, she will hold a morning tea at her workplace to raise money for breast cancer.

For a gold coin donation, visitors will enjoy pink baked goods from Commonwealth Bank staff, including pink cupcakes, pikelets, rice bubble biscuits and chocolate slice with pink icing.

She has also organised a silent raffle of more than 30 items donated by local businesses, with a combined value of $900.

People can bid on the items - which are displayed at the bank - by writing down their bid and placing it in the box.

"We've had such a good response from the community and businesses," Miss Bagorski said.

"It doesn't matter how much we raise - every little bit helps. If people don't want to bid, they can donate what they can instead."

The silent auction will be open until November 11 and today's morning tea will run from 9.30am to noon.
