Tigers at home to Killarney on memorial day
RUGBY LEAGUE: Ray Wagner reckons if the Killarney Cutters can get their best team on the paddock, they can give the Tenterfield Tigers a good game at Rugby League Park, Tenterfield, on Saturday at 2.30pm.
The unbeaten Tenterfield ladies will play Wallangarra in leaguetag in the early fixture at 1.30pm.
Saturday will be a memorial day to recall the support for the Tigers of the late Aub Gillespie who died earlier this year at age 90. He was a past league player at Tenterfield.
He was a Golden Tiger award winner and was regarded as the club’s No.1 supporter.
Tenterfield president Brendan Minns said his team would be close to full strength for the game.
Killarney beat Stanthorpe/Texas 28-22 in their last game with a late try to Brett Watts. Dion Galloway converted for a six-point win.
“We have come a long way this season,” co-coach Wagner said.
“The performance against a strong Stanthorpe/Texas side was our best of the season.
Despite having a bye on Saturday, the Cutters had two training sessions last week.
“We had eight on Tuesday night and 13 at Thursday night training but I am hoping for a better attendance this week with a game on Saturday,” Wagner said.
Jesse Wallace is the biggest improver for the Cutters this season.
Jake Grayson scored five tries in a win against Wallangarra in a game last month but has a leg injury.
“I am hoping Jake will be back for the finals but he still can’t run,” Wagner said.
While the top-four has been determined due to the withdrawal of Wallangarra from the competition, Wagner said there was still plenty to play for in the final four rounds of the fixture season.
“We will have to be on our A game for the rest of the season if we want to have any hope in the finals,” he said.
“The club is keen to finish third and secure a home semi.”
The fixtures at Tenterfield are the only games in the BRL this weekend.
