Time to prepare threat of fire

WITH this fire season predicted to be a scorcher, residents across the Southern Downs are being urged to take the time to understand what bushfire alerts mean, and have their personal emergency plan at the ready.

There are thee main warnings for the community, according to rural fire fighters Warwick area group officer Alan Payne.

Advice - If there is a fire in your area, there is currently no threat to property but stay informed.

Watch and Act - You could be impacted and should prepare to enact your bushfire plan.

Emergency warning - You need to enact your Bushfire Survival Plan and prepare for impact.

Mr Payne said alerts will be broadcast on local ABC radio in the case of bushfires that may threaten property.

For Warwick, the station is 96.3 FM.

"The message will be given for all the different areas, so if you are in a location where you know there is a fire, listen to how it could impact you," Mr Payne said.

Volunteer Community Educators, or VCEs, are also an essential part of the fire alert system.

They educate the public on what to do, and also go doorknocking with the SES in times of trouble.

"There is also system where warnings are sent out, particularly to mobile phones, that are automatically based on your location," Mr Payne said.

The Fire Danger Rating, which can range from low to catastrophic, is also an indicator of the current bushfire situation.

"The way the fire season is shaping up this year, it is important that people should be aware of what is happening and plan accordingly," Mr Payne said.
