Time to put party politics aside

AS THE Federal Election campaign draws on, it would appear voters are becoming more and more disillusioned with the major parties of Australian politics.

With just 23 days to go until the election, people seem to have almost switched off entirely.

In the Maranoa electorate, the disillusionment with federal politics is profound.

Unlike the marginal seats of our country cousins, we’re not likely to see the Prime Minister or the leader of the Opposition pop in for a visit.

We seem to have a “what’s in it for us” or “we’ll get nothing” attitude to politics here, and it’s justified.

But who do we have to blame?

Our allegiance to party politics, while admirable, isn’t doing us any favours.

It’s not by mere coincidence that the focus is on marginal seats at this election.

Billions are poured into marginal seats, while safe seats like our own are left in the dark – a lost cause for a competing party and an easy win for the existing.

While I’m not an advocate for any political party, as a voter and as a resident I feel we are let down by our leadership across the board.

Perhaps in this election the need is greater than ever to vote for individuals and leave party politics aside.
