Timely show-time prod

AGENTS across the region are encouraged to head to the Stanthorpe Show this weekend. The prime cattle section's popularity has never wavered and steward Peter Bonner is calling on producers to take part.

"We'd encourage all beef producers in the district to contribute towards the show by exhibiting some of their vealers or any cattle they might have in prime condition for the show, bearing in mind that all agents are entitled to sell their cattle here at the Stanthorpe Show,” he said.

"There's not really any changes from last year. Grainfed and grassfed cattle will be exhibited separately and not competing against each other.”

Mr Bonner has seen his fair share of shows, but he always looks forward to show time.

"About 60 years or something I've been taking part,” he said. "Breeds have changed enormously over the years. In the early days it was a pure grassfed section with three or four beef breeds.”

The competition and display is also an opportunity to raise money for a positive cause.

"We're going to have some LifeFlight cattle that are auctioned off. Proceeds from the sales will go to charity,” chief steward Michael Boucher said.

Through some government funding and tireless volunteers, the cattle yards have also undergone a facelift in time for the show.
