Akin to continue after rape remark

ANY hopes that Mitt Romney had of refocusing attention onto economics today were trashed after a Republican platform committee endorsed a strict anti-abortion stance that provides for no exemptions for rape or incest.

Also earlier today Todd Akin, the Republican congressman and Senate candidate who over the weekend reignited America's abortion debate by telling an interviewer he did not believe "legitimate" rape victims could fall pregnant, announced he would not stand aside despite intense pressure from the Republican establishment.

A 110-member committee endorsed the new platform in the lead-up to next week's Republican convention in Tamp, Florida.

"Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed," says the document.

"We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."
