Tom finds fun route in top comp

ALLORA State School student Tom Higgins isn’t into sport to win, he just loves competing in his main sport, orienteering.

He represented Darling Downs in the Queensland School Orienteering Championships at Leslie Dam and Applethorpe two weeks ago and is keen to become a regular participant in Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Orienteering Club events.

Higgins is in Year 9 and made a Darling Downs team for the first time in any sport this year.

He wasn’t competing to win events; just for the excitement of wearing the red and blue shirt of the Darling Downs team.

His team was runner-up in the state championships.

While he is interested in rugby league, orienteering and swimming are his main sports.

“I like the bush and going for a run,” Higgins said.

“Orienteering is a great sport.

“I want to make the Darling Downs team each year at school and compete in the championships.”

He rates his running better than his navigational skills but has another three years of interschool competition to perfect his ability with the compass.

“I couldn’t find one control in the sprint at the titles,” he said.

Each year at Allora school, he finishes in the top two in cross country and rates four kilometres his best distance. He is already training for next year’s state orienteering.
