Toni aims for the Maroons

AFTER playing for South Australia in last year's nationals in Hobart, Toni Cox is hoping to make her first state team in this weekend's ladies veteran's state championships at Queen's Park, Warwick.

Cox is in the Warwick team, which is in division 4/pool B at the championships.

The carnival has attracted 42 veteran's (over 35 years) teams this weekend for games on six fields. Some Warwick players will play for Moranbah in division 5.

Cox has already played touch rugby for Queensland and Australia and retired from touch last season to concentrate on making a Maroons team in hockey.

“It was such a buzz playing (for South Australia) in Hobart and I decided at the nationals last year to put all my mental drive into making a Queensland side,” Cox said.

Cox and three of her team-mates have nominated for state teams in various age groups and like any sport, the better the team goes, the better the higher selection chances of team members.

She insists winning isn't important.

“I just enjoy playing,” Cox said.

And play she does.

Each week, Cox plays for the Warwick veteran's men's side in the Toowoomba competition, playing at half, centre forward, wing or as an inside forward.

She then plays A2 ladies hockey in Toowoomba with Past High on Friday nights and finally for her Warwick club Saints on a Saturday at Queen's Park.

Cox said ladies had to be strong on the ball in men's hockey to avoid getting pushed around.

“We have to react a bit faster and have quicker skills,” she said. “I enjoy playing for the Warwick men's side and it is good to be leading the competition.”

She likes the step up to play A2 ladies hockey in Toowoomba.

Back home in Warwick, Cox enjoyed premiership success with Saints last season and is happy to see the skill level of players in the Warwick ladies competition is improving.

This weekend, Cox has three round games in division four, some cross over games and hopefully finals to press for selection in an over 40s Maroons sides to play in the nationals in Canberra later this year.
