Top clash set for Clifton in the TRL
RUGBY LEAGUE: After treading the turf of numerous grounds across the Toowoomba Rugby League jurisdiction for a total of 20 hours this season, the Wattles Warriors top graders will run on to their Platz Oval for their final competition fixture of 2017 on Sunday against premiership leaders Valleys Roosters.
Wattles have won their last four encounters, overwhelming Oakey and top-four teams Pittsworth, Dalby and last week the Highfields Eagles by 46-18.
Coach Gary Lawrence was 'tickled pink' with the outcome of his side's 15th season fixture last week, "but we aren't getting carried away, we set a goal of making the finals, first things first.”
The former State League coach is billing the contest with Valleys as a "real City verses Country stoush”.
"We're keeping things in perspective; Valleys are unbeaten and the current TRL form side.”
Despite their winning result at Highfields, the coach was disappointed his charges wandered from the game plan.
"We have to stick to what we decide at training, and our defence is vital, but having said that our momentum has been building since round 12 when we got 'touched up' by Souths, and the lads are now really believing in themselves.”
You won't get a premiership prediction out of the quietly spoken mentor, but he does have an opinion that defence will win the Toowoombah Rugby League silverware.
Lawrence rated Wattles' one to 17 across the paddock last week as "all exceptional, especially our bench of Michael Duggan, Tyrone Jowett and Perkins brothers, Brendan and Dale.
Front rowers Michael Person, Jarred Bradfield and Liam Ross have been paving the way for their talented backs led by Matt Duggan, who took a welcome rest for a portion of last week's match.
Back rowers Ty Gardner, Ryan Duggan and new face Jason Wilson also impressed Lawrence.
"We just have to maintain the momentum now,” he said.
Five-eighth Josh Henry shone in what was his best performance of the year while talented fullback Jackson Green was outstanding bringing the ball out of his own quarter.
"Considering we finished the game with 12 players it was great to get the premiership points against a top side,” Lawrence said.
Ty Gardner and Ryan Duggan will undergo last-minute fitness tests on Sunday while injured lock Jaime Abbas is still not shipshape to play.
Matches kick off this Sunday at Platz Oval, Clifton at 11.30am for the under-18 game, 1pm for reserve grade and A grade at 2.30pm.
After this weekend, there will be four weeks of finals footy, all at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
A big weekend of Clifton footy starts with a full round of junior fixtures between Wattles and Stanthorpe at Platz Oval on Saturday.
This weekend's fixture round is the third last of the season for the juniors.
