Collegians don headspace colours for fundraising match

THE Collegians Dragons have worn blue and white for more than half a century but they changed to the headspace colours for a fundraiser in round 14 of Warwick and District Junior Rugby League fixtures.

Travis Maguire from headspace was at the day along with representatives of sponsors Warwick Panel and Paint, Andersen's Carpets, Maly Engineering, Iconic Construction Group and Top Two Motorcycles.

Collegians president Glen Williamson said the aim was to heighten awareness of mental health issues in the 12 to 25 years age group which was the group covered by headspace.

"The players paid for the special jerseys which helped the fund-raising and we ran a couple of raffles which were well supported by Collegians and Goondiwindi players, parents and supporters," Williamson said.

The club is still finalising the fundraising effort but more than $1250 will be donated to headspace.

Nine games of rugby league were played on Saturday with Goondiwindi winning three of the competitive matches and Collegians two.

The two Collegians wins in the under-12 and U13 age group were significant as the games were the first lost by Goondiwindi in any of the five grades all season.

Collegians won 26-14 in U12s and 24-4 in U13s.

Scores are not kept in the four youngest age groups as the aim is learning and fun rather than winning.

Collegians will play in four major semi-finals and one minor semi at Platz Oval, Clifton, on Saturday.

Williamson said he was quietly confident his club would give Goondiwindi a good run for their money in four major semi-finals.

"Our teams have been improving all season," he said.

Collegians will host the league grand finals on their home ground on September 5.

It will be the one chance in seven years for the Dragons.
