Top Guns set to fire at Sandy Creek Raceway
KARTING: The Warwick Karting Club is gearing up for the CAMS Formula 4 Queensland Junior Top Guns meeting at Sandy Creek Raceway this weekend.
Club vice-president Luke O'Dea said there were five club members at the track yesterday preparing for the $40,000 Top Guns meeting.
"We had 10 competitors arrive before lunch yesterday to practise for the weekend,” O'Dea said.
"It was a little overcast yesterday and some of the drivers were hoping for a bit more sun during the next few days.”
Hayden Sell is a Warwick club member who will be competing this weekend.
"I have been in the cadet 12 class and this will be my third Junior Top Guns,” he said.
"The plan is to drive 60 to 80 laps at the track each day in practice.
"I think I can get top five but would still be happy if I finish in the top 10.”
Warwick driver Jayden O'Dea is in his third Junior Top Guns weekend.
"I competed in cadet 12 last year and are in the same class this year,” he said.
"The kart is the same one as last year but Dad and I are working on the set-up to make it go faster.
"I hope to be doing 90km/h down the straight on the western side of the track.”
Practice is on again today with practice at 9-11am tomorrow and then qualifying.
It is expected racing will start at lunchtime tomorrow and continue all day Sunday.
One driver will be chosen for the $10,000 CAMS Formula 4 test drive.
The $40,000 value in prizes makes this weekend's meeting the richest in junior karting history in Queensland.
There are 90 entries so far but the club expects to pass 100 as nominations will still be accepted on Saturday. Free admission for spectators and grandstand seating available.
