Top mobile black spots on Southern Downs

FIFTEEN Southern Downs locations have been prioritised to receive mobile black spot funding.

At the first general meeting yesterday, Southern Downs councillors noted the key locations to be included in a submission to the second funding round.

The submission was made following a Queensland department request in December to identify locations where funding from the Mobile Black Spot Program could be used to improve mobile phone services on the Southern Downs.

Mayor Tracy Dobie said the request to identify such locations was distributed broadly and council would be eagerly awaiting the outcome of a lengthy funding process.

She emphasised locations were prioritised based on criteria and in consultation with tourism businesses outside of urban areas and Warwick and Stanthorpe Chambers of Commerce.

"The Department sought the identification of locations, not only from councils, but from businesses, citizens and communities across Queensland, resulting in 1793 locations being identified across the state, with 51 of those in the Southern Downs region," she said.

"Council is hopeful funding would be granted for at least one mobile base station out of the 15 locations included in our submission.

"Last year Council received confirmation that funding had been approved for a new mobile base station on Eukey Rd, so it would be a great outcome for residents and tourist operators if we're successful in gaining additional mobile base stations in the Southern Downs."

The eligibility and viability of locations is based on the number of tourists passing through the area and the number of dwellings or accommodation outlets in the area.

The 15 prioritised locations are Goomburra and Goomburra Valley; The Summit; Ballandean; Glen Aplin; Greenlands; Emu Vale; Yangan; Mingoola; Thorndale; Waghorn Road, Pikes Creek; Somme Lane, Somme; Mount Tully Road at Mount Tully and between Lawer Ln and Sugarloaf Rd and Limberlost Rd at Fletcher.
