Top talent set to play in Warwick

SOUTHERN Downs tennis fans have the chance to watch national-ranked players in the Australian Money Tournament and see the Brisbane International Tournament Trophy at the Warwick courts this weekend.

There are 37 nominations for an event which has men's singles, men's and ladies doubles and mixed doubles.

Games start 8am Saturday and will be held all day and on Sunday. Most of the finals will be on Sunday morning and completed by 1.30pm.

Andrew McLeod, Mark Richards and community tennis officer Travis Dragoojlio are three of the favourites to take home the money in the men's singles at the first major Warwick tournament since the completion on flood repairs on the courts and clubhouse.

As an added attraction during the tournament on Sunday, the Brisbane International Tournament Trophy will be in Warwick from 9am to 3pm on day one of a five-day tour of the southern region.

Former Davis Cup team member Robert Smeets will be joined by former United States Open champion Mal Anderson and the tournament stars in the group showing off the trophy.

Warwick Tennis Association president Nathan Costello said it was great for Warwick to have Tennis Queensland bring tours like this to town. "It allows us to see some of the top players in Australia as well as displaying the trophies which have been won by the likes of Andy Roddick and Sam Stosur," Costello said.

"We encourage all children interested in tennis to look at the trophy on Sunday."

The international tournament at the new Brisbane International Tennis Centre at Tennyson early next year will feature many of the world's best players, including new United States Open champion Sam Stosur and triple grand slam champion Maria Sharapova.

Past Brisbane champions such as Kim Cljisters, Andy Roddick and current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova have lifted the trophy.

There is no charge to attend the tennis.
