WHAT a year in sport.
Laura Geitz and Clare McMeniman played in a third Queensland Firebirds ANZ Championship win with Clare going on to captain Australia as Laura has a break before the birth of her first child.
Matthew Denny was 19th in discus at the Olympics, Carlee Beattie won bronze in long jump at the Paralympics and John Eder won gold in masters cycling.
From footy to boxing to shooting and virtually every sport, there are successes at local, regional, state and national level.
As always, the volunteers add deserve gold for their efforts as does everyone who had a go.

THE sporting coverage in a local newspaper has many components. There is a staff member from the paper involved but more importantly, there are the club representatives who provide the information, send in columns, contribute photos and generally work with the Daily News to help us provide the best possible coverage in print and online.
May I say thank you to all who helped me and the Daily News in 2016. Most of all, drive carefully during the holiday period and think about someone who is lonely on Christmas Day to give them a call.
