Tourism icon to lead Destination Southern Downs
AFTER more than four years at the helm of the tourism industry in Warwick, Tracy Vellacott is preparing to step into her next challenge.
The Warwick Tourism and Events CEO looks set to take on the lead role of the new tourism body Destination Southern Downs, a challenge she is looking forward to.
Mayor Cr Peter Blundell yesterday confirmed Mrs Vellacott had been offered the role of interim general manager by the board.
Despite uncertainty in recent months about the body's, Mrs Vellacott has remained firm in her belief in the region's tourism and has a positive outlook as the new organisation takes form.
"Right now, there has never been a more dedicated staff - enthusiastic, unbelievably skilled, and ready to launch into Destination Southern Downs with the skill and passion needed for its success," she said.
"Coupled with the small but much-loved army of volunteers we look forward to kicking some big goals for the region."
Looking ahead to the future, the respected long-time local pointed to a number of challenges facing the new organisation as it finds its feet.
"The challenge will be around finances as the council has indicated they will provide the current levels of funding - that puts us on the back foot," she said.
"I would urge businesses, not just tourism businesses, but all businesses to support us."
Bringing together the tourism industries from two different districts will also prove to be a challenge, but Mrs Vellacott said it would only be beneficial to the region.
"Up until this point we've been swimming in our own lanes - now we can just jump in the pool together," she said.
"If everyone comes to the table then we're in a good position to better our regional economically and socially.
"I'm a believer in what is good for the Granite Belt and wine industry is good for us and what's good for us can be good for the Granite Belt."
Reflecting on what the Warwick Tourism and Events team has achieved over the years, Mrs Vellacott said she was proud to have led the organisation.
"Warwick Tourism and Events was one of the best economic development investments the council has made and I commend those with the vision 11 years ago," she said.
"I salute Belinda Novicky and Bev Marston, the board members and the volunteers who believed in the value of what we do.
"Particularly Ron, Greg and Majella who have been there since the beginning."
Mrs Vellacott said she and her team had enjoyed working alongside the art gallery team and was proud of the changes to Jumpers and Jazz over the years.
"We achieve superior results given our budget and human resources," she said.
"The originality and welcoming hospitality, the proximity to metro markets and people's natural urge to explore and experience mean we are in good shape to capitalise."
It's a love of the Southern Downs and its people that has driven the passionate CEO to strive for success.
"Aside from events and environment, we are blessed with beautiful heritage attractions, again run by teams of dedicated volunteers," she said. "When you marry all of this together, no wonder we call this region home.
"It is superb."
