Townsville floods tradie on sex assault charge

A BUILDER who was assessing a Townsville woman's property understood to be damaged in the floods has been charged with sexual assault.

It will be alleged that the licensed builder was providing advice in relation to repairs last month when the offences occurred.

Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit officer-in-charge detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles said the alleged assault was brazen and other tradespeople were in the house at the time.

A complaint was made by a 32-year-old Kirwan woman last month and the man was arrested by detectives last Friday.

He was charged with two counts of sexual assault.

"The (alleged) assaults were quite brazen, in so far as he's doing it to the victim in their home while there allegedly seeking to assist following our flood event," Sen-Sgt Miles said.

"The nature of the assaults are such that they clearly have a sexual connotation around them."

Detectives are investigating whether other members of the community have received similar advances or have also been allegedly assaulted by the man.

Tradespeople have been run off their feet in the wake of Townsville's worst flood disaster, as people look to rebuild their damaged properties.

Sen-Sgt Miles said the alleged offences were a "significant breach of trust".

"For the simple fact that these people are asking tradespersons to come in and obviously provide them with assistance (with) their properties," he said.

"You are bringing these people into your home environment under the understanding they are there in good faith to help you, not come there and commit offences against you."

Sen-Sgt Miles said that the alleged offender was an "exception".

"The reality is we don't want to tarnish what would be the vast majority of tradespeople out there who are in the community making a living and out supporting local people to recover from the floods," he said.

"This person would be an exception hence the reason why we want to identify whether or not there are any other persons out there who may have (allegedly) fallen victim to him."

The man is on police bail and will appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on April 16.
