Track records going galore on new Morgan Park surface

MOTORSPORT: Motorcycle racers from Western Australia are set to compete at Morgan Park Raceway a number of times this year following the re-surfacing of the track.

Western Australia was represented in a national sidecar round last weekend and there will be riders from the west in Warwick for a round of the Australian Superbike Championships on August 25-27.

Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland president Paul Dawson said there was a strong chance more bike riders from Western Australia would head to events at Morgan Park this year.

"Racing options are currently limited in Western Australia due to ongoing problems with Barbagallo Raceway," Dawson said.

West Australia sidecar pair, driver Jero Joyce and passenger Corey Blackman, were delighted with the improvements in the surface for the Warwick round of the national sidecar series.

While they both enjoy being at the front, they said the main reason for coming east was for the fun of the racing.

"It is cheaper to travel from Western Australia with the bike by road than air but you need another week of holidays," Joyce said.

With more than $1.2 million spend on re-surfacing the Morgan Park Raceway earlier this year, 2017 promised to be the year of the record breakers.

"Records were broken in most classes last weekend," Dawson said.

The next major events for the MSQ will be on June 17-18 when the third round of the GP Juniors Cup will be held on the same program as the MSQ Southern Downs Road Race Series.

This weekend will be round 1 of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships at Morgan Park.
