Tragic end to a trip home for Brisbane couple

A CLEVELAND couple in their 60s died in a head-on accident with a truck on the Cunningham Hwy, west of Warwick, just after midday Saturday.

The car caught fire when it collided with the truck, which jack-knifed.

The man and woman in the car died at the scene.

The male truck driver from New South Wales was taken to hospital for observation.

Warwick police said the couple were travelling from Narrabri towards Brisbane on Saturday when the crash occurred between the intersection of Strickfuss Rd, Allan, and the Leslie Dam turnoff.

It was the second fatal accident in the past year on that section of highway.

The truck driver had come from Allora and was heading to New South Wales when the accident happened. Police have not yet released the names of the couple but it is known they have family in Perth.

Warwick police yesterday said they did not believe charges would be laid in relation to the crash. One unit and a senior officer from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service were on the scene from when they received the call at 12.06pm to 3pm.

Firefighters cleaned up an oil spill on the roadway.

The highway was blocked to 6.45pm Saturday but there was little disruption to traffic. Vehicles were diverted at the Sandy Creek turnoff, south-east of the crash scene, via two local roads to the Leslie Dam turnoff north-west of the scene.

The State Emergency Service was on scene to help with traffic diversion.

Investigators from the Warwick Forensic Crash Unit are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them on 4660 4444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
