Trainer has high hopes to snare Magic Millions spot
RACING: Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie has two starters in the Freestone Feedlot MM Country Cup Qualifier Open Handicap at Allman Park on Boxing Day.
The Toowoomba trainer has two other starters on Boxing Day so will be heading to Warwick with four horses.
The track is in perfect condition for a seven-event card on Wednesday.
The meeting is a TAB fixture so the standard of horses will be a lot better than for a regular Saturday race meeting. The meeting will be televised nationwide.
Boxing Day and the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup meeting in October are the two best supported meetings each year.
The first race on Wednesday's program is at 1pm and the last at 4.53pm.
The country cup qualifier is the last and Currie rates Mr Markou as his best chance.
"He is a big strong horse and won well in Toowoomba on Saturday,” Currie said.
The horse isn't starting this weekend so will have an 11-day break between races.
"The five-year-old gelding will be ridden by experienced jockey Nozi Tomizawa.”
Mr Markou was bought at the Magic Millions so if he comes first or second in the country cup qualifier, he will book a spot in the $500,000 Cup on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast in January.
Currie also has Greywolf in the cup, a winner at Ipswich on December 5.
It will be a bit like a homecoming for Currie as his mother Donna (nee Nolan) is originally from Warwick.
"It is a great chance to catch up with family and friends,” he said.
