Trainer keen to win race in memory of Dad

RACING: Kellie Monckton has high hopes six-year-old mare Fleurieu will win a race in her father's memory at Allman Park on Saturday.

She started her racing career as a jockey and at one time rode in the same races as her father Trevor Locke.

Late last year, Trevor passed away and he is one of five racing enthusiasts being honoured with memorial races this weekend.

Fleurieu was purchased from Victoria six months ago and Kellie and husband Maurice are part owners in a syndicate which includes owners from Warwick, Allora, Toowoomba, Gold Coast and the United States.

Kellie trains the mare and said it would be great to win the memorial race.

"Allman Park has been a big part of my life,” she said.

"Many of my earliest memories are playing with other children at the races and tagging along with Dad during daily track work,” she said.

"He knew the track like the back of his hand.

"It was lovely for the Warwick Turf Club to name a race in Dad's honour, the club has been really good to us in this difficult time,” she said.

As for the chances of Fleurieu winning, Kellie said she was just beaten into second at Ballina two starts back at the same distance, 1350m.

"She has good Victorian form over 1350m prior to us purchasing her,” Kellie said.

"In her last start at Ipswich, she was unplaced but she has been working well on the Warwick track.”

She expects up to 20 Locke and Monckton family members and friends will be at the races on Saturday.
