Trainer works his magic

WARWICK trainer Walter James Payne was in the winners circle with Sahara Magic in race two over 1200 metres at the Warwick Picnic Races on Saturday.

Turf club president Jim Costello said Sahara Magic finished strongly in the last 150 metres to run away with the race.

“Her form on Saturday suggests the mare would race up to 1400 metres without any worries,” Costello said.

Toowoomba jockey Melody O’Brien was on board Sahara Magic.

Muffled Drum, trained by Patrick McGinley, from Hurstglen, led most of the way to win the first race, the maiden plate over 800m.

The class B was won by Skyyield, trained by Julie Wiedermann, of Clifton, who is also an accomplished harness racing trainer.

Goody Four Shoes finished third after winning at Stanthorpe the previous week under the training of Garry Schwenke, of Warwick.

Thomas Popp, from Goondiwindi, trained Dextrus to victory in the class 5 handicap.

The seven-year-old gelding previously ran second at Gilgandra.

Favourite So Shall This was well in the running for a place until the final 70 metres, finishing fourth.

The final race, the class 3 plate, was won by Naturally Mine, trained by Allan Ross, from Toowoomba.

Next race meet is on June 25 at Allman Park.
