Traveller’s shock at bomb blast
WHEN Rose City traveller Mike Geisel heard about the bomb blast in an area of India he had recently visited, he was upset.
The local dentist and a group of other Warwick residents were in shock upon hearing the Wagah Border area, which they visited three weeks ago, was the site of a terrifying bomb attack on Sunday.
More than 50 people were reportedly killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a restaurant on the Pakistani side.
Mr Geisel said the atmosphere during their visit was happy and the group didn't feel unsafe.
"It's upsetting to think those morons want to attack innocent people," he said.
"It's such a pity they want to damage these things and cause needless suffering."
Every evening as the sun sets the flags are lowered and the border gates are shut in a theatrical military ceremony conducted by soldiers from both sides while cheered on by hundreds of spectators on each side of the border.
The closing of the border ceremony draws in tourists from around the world with its display.
Travelling through from the Indian side of the border with Pakistan, Mr Geisel said security was very tight.
"There were lots of armed guards," he said. "All along both sides were grandstands packed with locals - everyone was happy."
Despite security concerns, the ceremony resumed on Monday.
