Treacle the echidna gets sweet release
LIFE has become sweet for Treacle the echidna, after she was released back into the wild last night following a month under the care of a wildlife carer.
The female echidna was rescued by carer Maggie Hughes on a road near Leyburn after being hit by a car last month.
Ms Hughes, who is part of the organisation Woop Woop Wildlife Rescue, said the incident left Treacle with a chunk of skin off her beak and a damaged front paw.
As the only independently licensed echidna carer on the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Ms Hughes has cared for a number of the natives over the years.
"If you find an echidna don't lift them up with a shovel and don't warm them up," she said.
"Echidnas have to be returned to exactly where they came from - they know where food sources and burrows are."
