Tree pays respect to the fallen

A TREE of remembrance and reflection stands firmly in front of the Leslie Park cenotaph to pay respects to the 266 Warwick soldiers who never returned home.

Tree artist Julie Harris can thank her great attention to detail in her Lest We Forget tree, which helped her win the open and artistic category.

"Julie's attention to detail was amazing," tree judge Margie Creek said.

"I loved that she included the ground in her display.

"The overall piece is multi-faceted and obviously she thought a lot about each area."

"It was also very touching to see several artists honouring the Anzacs in their artwork this year."

Mrs Harris said she wanted to create something meaningful and important in her tree design.

"The design reflected everything I felt in my heart," she said.

"I asked the art gallery if I could choose the tree, because I wanted the tree there so the war memorial could illuminate the tree.

"The purpose of my tree is to respect and honour the gift of sacrifice and give thanks daily for the enriched lives we are able to live because of this sacrifice."

Mrs Harris individually wrote the names of the 266 Warwick soldiers and hung them from the branches.

Her tree had green crocheted squares on the ground, which gradually changed to darker greens and browns as they progressed up the tree.

She also displayed a story about a young boy who went to war as a child.

"In the story it talks about the young boy climbing trees with his mates, to me the tree represents that."

This was the first time she had decorated a tree.

"I went to the festival three years ago and I felt inspired."

The trees will remain decorated until 4pm Sunday, July 26.
