‘Tremendous inroads’ on roadworks: Mayor

MORE than 60km of Southern Downs roads have been re-sealed or re-sheeted in the past year, according to a Southern Downs Regional Council report.

The report highlighted significant works undertaken by the council in the 2014-2015 capital works program, with 16 major works completed during the financial year.

Major projects completed in the past year include the widening of a section of Inverramsey Rd, at Goomburra, upgrades to the Locke St car park opposite the Warwick Hospital and the reconstruction of Mullins Rd Bridge, at Talgai.

Mayor Peter Blundell commended engineering staff for making "tremendous in-roads" in completing so many projects.

Cr Blundell said the projects would have lasting benefits for residents right across the region.

"The community can have confidence that council can and has delivered some very important capital projects identified in the 2014-2015 Capital Works Program, and continues to invest in vital infrastructure improvements within the region," he said.

A further two projects are nearing completion, including the long awaited sealing of Roach St at Mt Colliery - the most densely populated rural street on the Southern Downs.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the council was also anticipating the completion of two further projects by the end of the current financial year.

"An upgrade of Roach St at Mt Colliery from a gravel road to a bitumen-sealed road and associated drainage works is currently underway," he said.

"Likewise, the Black Spot Willi and Aldred intersection upgrade project with improvements to the surfacing, line marking, signage and associated street lighting is currently in progress."

The council anticipates widening and rehabilitation of a section of Nundubbermere Rd, south- west of Stanthorpe, and the Berat-Forest Springs Rd bridge replacement, near Allora, will be finished by July 31.

Works on Nundubbermere Rd were fully funded under the Roads to Recovery Program.
