High school rep trio lines up for open league clash
THREE Darling Downs schoolboy representatives will be part of the clash between Warwick and Stanthorpe state high schools in open rugby league this afternoon at St Mark's Oval.
Jaime Abbas will play in the back row or halves for Warwick High after just returning from the state open championships in touch in Cairns.
He missed the Warwick High game a fortnight ago with injury.
He will come up against Stanthorpe High pair Michael Pearson and Tom Landers.
All three will play in the state rugby league championships later this month at Kingaroy.
Stanthorpe High won a pre-season game between the two sides before Warwick High improved to beat St Mary's 2 from Toowoomba convincingly a fortnight ago.
The competition is a round robin among six teams, so Warwick and Stanthorpe High each need a win as only three teams will feature in the regional semi-finals along with one from the Downs inner region.
Josh Ryan impressed with his leadership of the Warwick High team against St Mary's 2.
Warwick High coach Robert Stewart said his side had a bit more structure now than in its loss to Stanthorpe High in a trial game.
"We have been training three times a week," he said.
"The side will miss Cameron Martin-Brown who has a shin injury after playing well in the second row in the win against St Mary's."
